Biography & Disclosure


Richard A. Van Enk, Ph.D., CIC, has served as the Director of Infection Control and Epidemiology and Infection Control Officer at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan since 1994. He received his Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Kansas and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Loyola University Hospital. He is certified by the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology and is a Fellow in the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America.  Besides the prevention of influenza, Dr. Van Enk has research and professional interests in the effect of hospital design on the transmission of infection, the measurement and improvement of hand hygiene in health care staff, and the areas of antibiotics, antibiotic resistance, antibiotic susceptibility testing, and the appropriate use of antibiotics.


Dr. Van Enk is a consultant and registered expert speaker to medical professionals on the topic of influenza for two pharmaceutical companies that manufacture antiviral agents or vaccines for the treatment or prevention of influenza, including GlaxoSmithKline and MedImmune, Inc.  Specific products made by these companies will not be mentioned or promoted in this site, and no financial sponsorship from commercial sources supports the site.
